"Over the River and Through the Wood"
John O'Hara
A man goes to visit his daughter. He thinks he must sell a house to protect his family after his wife has died. He walks in on a woman.
That's about all I have for a summary. In fact, I'm not even sure that stuff happened because it was so muddled. I don't know why this story wasn't fitting in my brain but every action was diluted by a large amount of words. It was overt and fanciful and frankly felt not American at all. They talk about status and wealth and having drivers? I can't relate. Clearly this man is sad and doesn't have a great relationship with what is left of his family, but is that all? That's all I got anyways.
